Check the storage cap before replacing it. The tip and junction should remain hydrated in the manufacturer-approved storage solution. Confirm that the cap contains the required amount and seats correctly. Record the date, reading, response time, and any cleaning or calibration in a grow log. That makes repeated slow response or calibration trouble easier to spot.

Calibrate With Fresh Buffers

Calibration compares the meter with known reference solutions. Bluelab instructs users to calibrate after cleaning and at least monthly for its pH probes. Hanna's general procedure starts with a clean, hydrated electrode and fresh buffers that bracket the expected measurement range. Heavy use, prolonged storage, cleaning, or questionable readings may call for earlier calibration when the manual says so.

  1. Inspect the electrode and rehydrate it first if the tip or junction is dry.

Store The Probe Hydrated

Proper storage belongs on every pH meter care checklist. Bluelab specifies KCl storage solution for its probes, while Hanna specifies compatible electrode storage solution. Both warn against storing a pH electrode in reverse-osmosis, distilled, or deionized water. Pure water may be acceptable for rinsing certain models, but rinsing and storage are different jobs.

Check the cap's solution regularly and top it up as the manual directs. For longer breaks, use the maker's long-term storage method and check the solution level periodically. Protect the glass from drops and sudden temperature changes.
