Seasonal Guide to Grow Tent Gardening: What to Grow and When

Even though your grow tent lets you garden year-round, choosing the right plants for the right time of year can help you make the most of your space and resources. As we move into the fall and winter months, certain crops will thrive under indoor conditions while others may need extra attention.

Below is a beginner-friendly guide to what to grow and how to adjust your setup for the upcoming seasons.

Fall (September - November)

Best Crops:

  • Leafy greens like spinach, lettuce, and kale

  • Herbs such as basil, cilantro, and parsley

  • Fast-growing root vegetables like radishes and baby carrots

Tips:

  • Shorter natural daylight hours mean your grow lights will need to run longer - aim for 14 to 16 hours per day for greens and herbs.

  • Cooler outdoor temperatures help keep your grow tent’s internal environment stable, but check ventilation to prevent excess humidity buildup.

Suggested Setup:

  • Small to medium tents (2x4 or 4x4)

  • LED full-spectrum lighting

  • Clip-on circulation fans to maintain airflow

Winter (December - February)

Best Crops:

  • Microgreens for quick harvests

  • Hardy herbs like thyme, oregano, and rosemary

  • Compact fruiting plants such as cherry tomatoes and dwarf peppers (if using high-output lighting)

Tips:

  • Indoor heat can lower humidity, so consider adding a small humidifier to keep levels between 50% and 70%.

  • Position lights close enough to the canopy for strong growth without causing heat stress.

Suggested Setup:

  • Medium tents (4x4 or 5x5) for more light coverage

  • Supplemental heating if your grow space gets cold

  • Adjustable LED grow lights to handle a variety of crops

General Seasonal Advice

  • Rotate crops to keep your growing medium healthy and avoid pest buildup.

  • Adjust feeding schedules - plants grow slower in cooler months, so nutrient needs may decrease.

  • Plan ahead for spring crops by starting seeds indoors toward the end of winter.

With the right seasonal planning, your grow tent can keep producing fresh, flavorful harvests all year long.
